Hi. I’ve been reading your blog and other milspouse blogs for a few months now. It was a great support when my Sailor deployed. I have no connections to the military world so this is all new to me and I’ve learned so much about the military life from people like you who are willing to share your stories.

My Sailor will be PCSing when he returns and has asked me to move with him. We plan to be married although we’re trying to figure out if that will happen before or after the move because of such a short time window. He is asking for my input on potential bases and I don’t even know where to start researching. I was wondering if you had suggestions on what you look for when evaluation a prospective location or how you and you husband determine preferences when it comes time to rotate out of a department. I am a tax accountant so I’m hoping my skills are fairly transferable to a new location. My only input so far has been to try and find a base near a big city so I’ll have more job options. I’m sure there are so many other factors I should be considering though. Because I’m not currently a spouse I can’t access many of the housing or welcome sites for potential bases to get information from those sources. Any ideas/suggestions you have would be appreciated.

    Thanks for your time.

Hello there – thanks for the comment! As far as what bases you might like, it probably would be easier for you to find out from your boyfriend what are his top three locations and he can speak with his detailer to find out what will be available when he is up for orders. Getting your hopes up on a base you’d really like only to find out later is not available could get frustrating!

I think you have to be married to live with him on base / in housing….so, you’ll probably want to live off base, you can search realtor.com or similar sites to research house prices / apts. Google will pull up just about anything you are looking for…..including base websites etc. Hope that helps 🙂 Hopefully, he’ll be home soon so the house/apt/orders hunting can begin! 🙂
