San Diego Submarine Returns Home After Deployment

San Diego Submarine Returns Home After Deployment

Last Updated: 02/03/2007 05:20 PM

After spending the last six months in the western Pacific, a San Diego-based Navy submarine is back home.

The USS Asheville arrived Saturday afternoon at Naval Base Point Loma. The crew received a hero’s welcome from their family and friends.

After working so hard these past few months, the Sailors can finally enjoy some much-deserved rest and relaxation.

“During that time, over 80 percent of that time was spent at sea, said USS Asheville Commanding Officer Scott Swehla. “And they’ve earned a good month off. So that for the next 30 days, we’ll be doing some rest and relaxation and getting re-familiarized with our families.”

While at sea, the Asheville visited Japan, Hong Kong and Guam.

…….Submarine crews already in port at the base greeted the Asheville’s crew home with a traditional prolonged blast of each ship’s whistle.

During its deployment in the western Pacific, the submarine made port calls in Yokosuka, Japan; Hong Kong, Guam, Saipan and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

“During the six months while the ship was deployed, it traveled over 37,000 nautical miles, weathered three typhoons and conducted the first ever coordinated port visit with USS Stethem on Victoria Harbor, Hong Kong,” said Cmdr. Scott C. Swehla, the ship’s commanding officer.

The 360-foot Asheville, which is capable of going 32 knots underwater, is the Navy’s 47th Los Angeles-class submarine and the fourth vessel to bear the name of the North Carolina city. It was commissioned on Sept. 28, 1991.

Don’t you just love that photo.

Camera’s at a Homecoming!  Wow!  The perks of a fast boat vs. a trident.  I guess if you were in the parking lot of the PX (oops…there goes that Army lingo sneaking in there again) NEX or bowling alley – they might allow a camera??

It also looks like there is a baby in the photo??  That photo just might capture the first time that sailor is meeting his new baby girl.  What a special moment for that family.  It is so nice to see this news coverage of something positive, vs. the wife who is (I hate to say it, almost not dressed – and yes, you know what Im talking about).

After viewing the video I discovered the photo above is not the “First Kiss”, but what a keepsake that special Navy Submarine Wife will have for the rest of her life!  Thank you Camera Man!

Welcome Home Boys!!
